Some Facts
The truth about martial arts
- There are no secrets, you can’t learn anything worth learning in an afternoon.
- It takes a lot of hard work to get good.
- No matter how good the instructor is, if you’re not willing to work hard, you won’t get better. But ordinary people with a reasonable amount of commitment, who are willing to practice regularly, can get very good – you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete.
- Depending on your personality, your athletic talent, and your commitment, it takes from six months to a year to feel a significant difference in your sense of your ability to defend yourself in an emergency.
- Roughly speaking, someone of average size and strength who practices hard for a year will be able to defend himself in 60 percent of street encounters. Given another two or three years, we can say, roughly, 80 percent. But it may take years to be able to have a reasonable expectation of dealing with the remaining 20 percent – especially if those situations include multiple attackers, weapons, professional fighters, or having to protect someone else, like a loved one. It is COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC to expect to be able to deal with any violent situation that arises after only a few months of training, and if any martial arts instructor tells you he can teach you to do this, run the other direction. This is also good advice – to anyone, at any level – who finds himself in a fight.
